IFRA for Fragrances, Essential Oils & Flavours
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) issue guidelines on the use and handling of fragrance ingredients in order to protect consumers of fragrance products from any adverse effects, for example fragrance allergy.
IFRA Standards are currently on the 45th Amendment and have become more complex in recent years for several reasons, including the requirements of the QRA approach and the increasing number of essential oil constituents with an IFRA limit.
There are different types of IFRA limits, all which have to be taken into account when determining IFRA compliance and IFRA limits for formulations. These include:
- Qualitative Risk Assessment (QRA) Limits for sensitising ingredients (11 categories which relate to different application areas. Can be non-cumulative and cumulative)
- Phototoxic Limits for phototoxic ingredients (1 category – skin exposed to sunshine, a cumulative limit)
- Systemic Limits for ingredients which have systemic toxicity (5 categories relating to different application areas. Non Cumulative limits)
- Purity and specification guidelines
For more information you can visit the IFRA web site. The 44th Amendment is now published (45th is available to IFRA members and will be published fully in 2011)
